3. Epoxy Troubleshooting Guide

Run into an issue during your project? Our troubleshooting tips provide quick, practical solutions to common epoxy problems.

Q: Why are there bubbles in my epoxy floor?

A: Bubbles are typically a result of improper flooring preparation, outgassing from porous concrete, improper mixing, and temperature changes, or applying a resinous material in direct sunlight . To avoid bubbles:

  1. Prep the concrete by filling all your chips, divots, and holes.
  2. Seal porous surfaces with a primer coat before applying the epoxy.
  3. Use a slow-speed mixer.  It's important to not whip bubbles into your resinous material while you mix it.  Avoid trapping air in the epoxy and then pouring it on the floor.
  4. Maintain a stable room temperature between 70°F and 85°F and NEVER apply resinous material in the hot sun or on a hot floor.

Q: How do I fix uneven epoxy coverage?

A: Uneven epoxy occurs due to improper material distribution. To avoid this:

  1. Always calculate the correct epoxy amount for your floor size.  Refer to the Technical Data Sheets for application rates.
  2. Use a notched squeegee to evenly spread the product.
  3. Backroll with a high-quality 3/8" nap roller for a smooth finish.

Q: What causes fisheyes or rejection in epoxy floors?

A: Fisheyes are caused by contaminants on the surface, such as oil or dust or by not sanding at all or not sanding enough in between coats. To prevent this:

  • Grind or shotblast, and thoroughly clean before applying epoxy.
  • If applying epoxy, polyaspartic, or any resinous material over another resinous material, sand thoroughly and completely in between coats.
