Using It for a Partial Flake Floor For a partial flake floor, use the pigmented epoxy as the visible body coat and broadcast a controlled amount of decorative flakes into the wet resin. Unlike a full broadcast floor, the epoxy color remains an important part of the finished appearance. After cure, seal the floor with the topcoat specified for the system. Using It as a Metallic Epoxy Base Coat Metallic epoxy floors normally begin with a solid color epoxy base. The base coat creates a consistent background and prevents raw concrete color and surface variation from interfering with the metallic design layer. Use the appropriate pigmented Self Leveling 100% Solids Epoxy as the base coat, then apply Metallic Dream Epoxy as the metallic body coat. Do not use this product as a substitute for a dedicated metallic body coat. High moisture concrete: Test the slab and use a suitable Moisture Vapor Barrier when moisture conditions exceed the limits of the planned flooring system. Metallic body coats: Use Metallic Dream Epoxy when the epoxy itself needs to provide metallic movement and design time. Aggressive chemical exposure: General purpose epoxy should not be selected simply because it is 100% solids. For battery acid, concentrated acids, chemical storage, containment, and other aggressive environments, review APF Epoxy Novolac 900 and confirm chemical resistance against the specific exposure. Frequently Asked Questions Is this a true 100% solids epoxy? Yes. This is a true 100% solids epoxy by volume. There is no water or added solvent that must evaporate from the coating during cure. What is this epoxy best used for? It is the general purpose high build One Stop Epoxy resin for solid color floors, partial and full flake receiver coats, quartz and sand broadcast systems, commercial floors, and solid color base coats beneath metallic epoxy. Is this a good epoxy for garage floors? Yes. It can be used as the visible body coat for a solid color garage floor or as the pigmented receiver coat beneath partial or full broadcast vinyl flakes. How much does one 3 gallon kit cover? Coverage depends on the system. A flake receiver coat typically covers approximately 399 to 450 square feet per 3 gallon kit. A heavier solid color or commercial application typically covers approximately 300 to 405 square feet per kit. Why does coverage change between flooring systems? Coverage determines film thickness. One gallon spread over 150 square feet produces a thinner epoxy layer than the same gallon spread over 100 square feet. Select the coverage rate based on the required film build rather than trying to stretch the material farther. Does the epoxy come pre pigmented? Yes. Light Gray, Medium Gray, White, Tan, and Black arrive pre pigmented. Clear is also available. What is the mix ratio? The mix ratio is 2 parts Part A to 1 part Part B by volume. How do I mix a full 3 gallon kit? Premix Part A, add the complete Part B, and mix the full kit for 2 minutes at 300 to 450 RPM using a Cage or Box style mixer. Then GET IT OUT OF THE BUCKET and onto the floor immediately. Can I use a red paddle mixer? Yes, for properly measured smaller batches. Mix smaller batches with the red paddle for 3 minutes. For a complete 3 gallon kit, use only a Cage or Box style mixer because it moves the full volume of material more effectively. How much time can the epoxy stay in the bucket? Approximately 8 minutes at 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not treat that as usable installation time. Once mixing is complete, GET IT OUT OF THE BUCKET immediately. How much working time do I have on the floor? Working time on the floor is approximately 45 minutes at 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Higher temperatures shorten working time. Why is working time longer on the floor than in the bucket? The epoxy reaction generates heat. A large amount of mixed resin sitting in a bucket holds that heat and causes the reaction to accelerate. Spreading the material across the floor allows heat to dissipate and provides substantially more usable application time. What roller should I use? Use a quality 3/8 inch shed resistant epoxy roller cover after spreading the material at the required coverage rate. When can I apply another coat or topcoat? The normal recoat window is approximately 12 to 24 hours. Light sanding before additional epoxy or finish coats is recommended. If more than 24 hours have passed, mechanically abrade the surface to a clean, uniformly dull finish before recoating. When can the floor handle vehicle traffic? Allow approximately 72 hours before vehicle traffic under normal curing conditions. Full chemical cure is approximately 7 days. Can this be used for a full flake floor? Yes. Apply the pigmented epoxy as the receiver coat and broadcast vinyl flakes to rejection while the epoxy remains wet. After cure, scrape and vacuum the floor before installing the clear topcoat. No. Self leveling describes how the epoxy flows after application. It does not replace concrete preparation. The slab still needs to be clean, mechanically profiled, repaired, vacuumed, and evaluated for moisture before coating. Can this epoxy be used outside? Do not use this epoxy as an exposed exterior finish. Epoxy can amber when exposed to direct sunlight. Exterior flooring systems must be designed so the epoxy is buried beneath a UV resistant broadcast and suitable UV resistant topcoat. Build the Complete Epoxy Flooring System The 100% solids epoxy body coat is only one layer of a complete floor. Depending on the slab and final use, the project may also require a primer, moisture vapor barrier, concrete repair products, decorative vinyl flakes or aggregate, and a compatible topcoat.
